The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
Opened to the public in 1987 as the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden. Second youngest of the nine South African National Botanical Gardens managed by the South African National Bio diversity Institute (SANBI). The botanical garden was renamed the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in March 2004.
This in honour of the late deputy president of the ANC, Walter Sisulu (1912-2003). The spectacular 70-metre Witpoortjie falls forms the centre piece and backdrop to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. Extending across 300 ha of parkland and include, a succulent rockery garden, medicinal garden, cycad garden, water garden, fern trail, wild flower area, arboretum, Geological Garden, a water wise garden, People's Plant Garden, Birds and Butterfly garden.
Over 230 species of birds have been recorded in the Botanical Gardens
Signposted walks and trails crisscross the beautifully landscaped indigenous gardens, with over 600 species of indigenous plants. A naturally forested area next to the river and a nature reserve along the Roodekrans ridge. Natural vegetation of the Botanical Gardens is known as 'Rocky Highveld Grassland' consisting of both grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams.

Over 230 species of birds have been recorded in the Botanical Gardens, with a pair of magnificent Verreaux's Eagles nesting on the cliffs close to the waterfall.
