Umfolozi was established in 1895, and is the oldest Game Reserve in Africa. Hluhluwe Umfolozi was originally three separate game reserves, joined under its current name in 1989. The Game Park, set in the heart of Zululand, 280 km north of Durban and covers 96 000 ha containing a vast diversity of fauna and flora. Hluhluwe - Umfolozi game Park is the only national game park in KwaZulu-Natal where the Big Five occur.

The Hluhluwe – Umfolozi wildlife park became world renowned during the 1960’s for its efforts in white rhino conservation, achieving great success in increasing the Rhino’s numbers in South Africa. Current efforts are again focused on the rhino, this time on the endangered black rhino. Hluhluwe – Umfolozi currently has 20% of the worlds black rhino and has the largest population of white rhino in the world. Umfolozi is home to Africa's Big Five: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cape buffalo, and Rhino, both Black and White.

With an abundance of other species, including: Hippo, cheetah, hyena, jackal, blue wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, kudu, Impala, Waterbuck, Nyala, Eland, Duiker, reedbuck, warthog, Nile crocodile, bush pig, mongoose and baboons. The game park has the African wild dog, these were introduced in 1981, however the park has met with limited success, however currently has 2 packs within the park. Reptiles and amphibians include: tortoises, terrapins, lizards and snakes.

A variety of habitats exist within the game park, this is the primary reason why it is a major birding destination in South Africa. Over 320 bird species can be found, including: Wahlberg's eagle, Shelley's francolin, Southern Ground-Hornbill, Trumpeter Hornbill, Green-backed Heron, African Fish-Eagle, Pied, Giant and Malachite Kingfisher with African Wood, Barn and Marsh Owl found occasionally. Hluhluwe - Umfolozi with over 320 bird species

The Hluhluwe Flood Plain is the only area in South Africa where Orange, Yellow and Pink throated long claw species can be seen collectively. A boat on Hluhluwe dam takes visitors on guided trips twice a day. Guided early morning and late afternoon walks are particularly rewarding. Game viewing hides overlook waterhole's, enabling easy game viewing at close range.

Hluhluwe - Umfolozi is in a low risk malaria area so it is advisable to consult your doctor before traveling on your safari.
